Asalem is a rustic-chic pousada in Ilha Grande, perched on a hill surrounded by dense rainforest, overlooking the turqoise waters of Abraäo bay. If you’re looking for tranquility over convenience, this is the place to come. There are no neighbours – unless you count the monkeys, squirrels, fireflies, blue butterflies and tropical birds. The village of Abraão is a 20-minute walk away or the owners can take you there by boat (for a charge), which takes just ten minutes. Be aware that on the pathway to the village, your feet may get wet at high tide!
You’ll feel very much at one with nature here. Local fishermen bring the day’s catch to the house for dinner that night. Fresh fruit grows on the trees in the garden. There’s a beach just next door and often you’ll have it all to yourself. When the sun goes down, gas lamps and candlelight add to the pousada’s ambience.
Inside the rooms at Asalem
There are four Standard rooms located at the top of the pousada, offering sweeping views across the bay and surrounding rainforest. These light-filled rooms all have a bedroom located on an upstairs mezzanine, with a bathroom and living area downstairs, opening out onto an outdoor patio. They have air-conditioning, a hammock, minibar and an in-room safe.
The Eco-Premium Suite and Eco-Honeymoon Suite are more spacious than the standard rooms and overlook the bay. The Honeymoon Suite is closer to the water. Both offer splendid views, king size beds and a private verandah, as well as air-conditioning, a fan, minibar and an in-room safe.
If you’re travelling as a group or with children, the Chalet is ideal. Located at the top of the property, away from the other rooms, this fisherman style house has a king size bed and a sofa bed in the living room. In addition to offering privacy and excellent water views, it is air-conditioned and has a fully equipped kitchen.
During low season (May – Oct), Standard Double Suites start at R$660 and Double Eco Suites at R$860 per night. During high season (Nov – Apr) Standard Double Suites start at R$740 and Double Eco Suites at R$960 per night.
