Pirenópolis, Goiás

Tucked away in the rolling mountains of Goiás lies a hidden gem called Pirenópolis. Founded in the early 18th century, Pirenópolis is a buzzing hive of activity, with cobblestone streets, colourful facades, and rich cultural heritage. It’s approximately 150 kilometres from Brasilia, Brazil’s capital city. This is where you come if you’re looking for timeless beauty and abundance of natural wonders, particularly waterfalls and nature trails.

What makes Pirenópolis special?

The colonial heart of Pirenópolis is packed with places to eat, drink, shop and explore. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Up on the hill, imposing churches loom over the town, and narrow, cobblestoned streets snake their way down towards a babbling river, lined with bustling bars, cafés and restaurants. Live music wafts over the rooftops of an evening. Some streets are packed not with cars, but with tables, filled with relaxed diners. Even on a Monday, this town is humming.

Sitting by a waterfall

If you’re travelling with dogs, we highly recommend Salto Corumbá. This dog-friendly nature park is a 30-minute drive from Pirenópolis. Here you’ll find a number of different waterfalls connected by walking trails and yes, even a rollercoaster (which was also dog friendly! Our dogs loved it!). There are also waterslides, bars and restaurants too, as well as accommodation, if you feel like staying away from the hustle and bustle of the village.
