Pousada Espaço Zen in Barra Grande, Piauí, is much as the name suggests – a zen space, a relaxing enclave, in spite of its location in the heart of the village. Made up of a number of rustic-chic chalets and bungalows, surrounded by a sand garden boasting brightly coloured flowers and towering coconut trees, this pousada beautifully blurs the line between indoors and outdoors.

The bungalows and chalets pay homage to the nature that surrounds them. A standout feature are the indoor gardens inside the bathrooms. There’s something divine about waking up each morning to a shower in a breezy bathroom with its own living plants. In fact, the Superior Bungalow has a giant coconut tree sprouting from the bathroom floor up into the sky above – a wonderful design feature that feels respectful to nature, and reminds you where you are.

Barra Grande is the kind of place where you’re going to want to spend time outdoors. Each bungalow and chalet features an outdoor verandah with hammocks and comfy sofas. Inside, each has its own style of décor, but the overarching theme is handmade elegance. Satisfyingly chunky timber beds, handwoven mats and foot stools. A simple vase of flowers.
